Like most people, your fitness and wellness routines will be tested during the holidays. People may be visiting. You might be traveling. Televisions will be filled with images of holiday meals featuring ham, mashed potatoes, and desserts. Your coworkers will shower you with appetizing presents and an abundance of sweets for the workplace. Although it’s not easy to maintain your wellness journey during the holidays, that doesn’t mean you must give up entirely on your fitness goals. Here are ideas to help keep you motivated and fit over the holiday season.

Move Around

It has long been recognized that being active and moving around will keep you healthy, regardless of the season. While vigorous routines may be the most effective, they might not be practical when traveling or having houseguests. Low-impact activities are also beneficial and can be combined with being social. Some ideas include going to the mall, walking around the block, or choosing stairs over elevators. Set a reminder to move, so you don’t forget.

Stick to a Routine

The holidays are a time meant to spend with family and friends, and it’s not always possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A stable routine is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself when you are out of your comfort zone. Strike a balance between quality time with others and self-care. If you are staying in a hotel, ensure the facility has a fitness center and map out a block of time each day just for you. A schedule will allow you to enjoy time with your loved ones without feeling guilty.

Make Time for Sleep

Getting enough sleep is also essential to keep you feeling and looking great. Before going to bed, ensure your mattress is comfortable and that you have turned off all of your electronics around 1.5 to 2 hours before you fall asleep. Limit your water consumption by at least 45 minutes before going to bed. If you are having difficulty falling asleep, try playing some relaxing music.

Choose Your Foods Wisely

One of the most critical factors you can consider when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is eating lots of healthy food and drinking plenty of water. Drinking water approximately 30 minutes before a meal and having more during a meal are recommended to aid digestion and help you feel full sooner. Prevent oncoming dehydration by drinking water throughout the day, too. By the time you feel thirsty, studies show that you are already dehydrated. This can lead to poor decision-making when it comes to food selection.
